Never A Dull Moment
There are always a million projects in motion on a farm. This week I was focusing on planting yet another perennial flower bed! This flower bed has 10 beautiful Montauk daisies as well as being the home to an experiment in over wintering celosia, a beautiful spiky purple flower. I particularly love perennial flowers for their wide range of colorful, dependable blooms. From daffodils and narcissus in the spring, to summers filled with globe alliums, irises, and yarrow Perennials have so much to offer the growing season.
Slicing tomatoes are finally ready to come on to the scene! This summer has on the whole been a bit bit cool. This caused the tomatoes to take far longer to ripen. But never fear, the beautiful deliciousness that are heirloom tomatoes are here. On Friday there will be a mix of red, pink and golden heirloom tomatoes that are perfect to add to salad, homemade pizza, or make the perfect tomato sandwich.
This week we have two new funky veggies, tomatillos and husk cherries! Tomatillos, and husk cherries are in the same family and look very similar, except that tomatillos are much larger then their cousins husk cherries. Tomatillos are a versaitile addition to many savory dishes, I like to use mine in traditional salsa verde, green chili sauce or in chili! Husk cherries have a very unique fruity flavor, somewhere between pineapple and caramel. If you don’t eat them right out of hand try adding them to muffins or pancakes!
Also this week we have red soup onions! Soup onions are a bit smaller then your average onion but full of the same amazing intense flavor. You can use them just like normal onions or try just cutting in half and adding whole to stock.
See you Friday!
