Here Comes Summer
What a busy week this has been! As the weather has turned warm there has been dozens of projects to do on the farm. Everything from seeding and planting, to weeding and watering. It is amazing to see everything grow as the farm takes shape for the summer.
This week we have the debut of one of my seasonal favorites, garlic scapes! Garlic scapes come from the top of the garlic plant and need to be cut so that the plant can put all it’s energy in to growing big delicious bulbs of garlic. They have a bright fresh flavor and are best if added to dishes towards the end of cooking for maximum flavor.
Scapes can be eaten raw or sauteed and added to any dish you put garlic in, try them in salad dressing, hot or cold soups, or grilled. My favorite way to enjoy garlic scapes is to blend them with some olive oil and sea salt to make a simple pesto. This pesto can be tossed with pasta, used as a sandwich spread or mixed into a marinate.
Also this week you have the option of lavender. Best know for it’s wonderfully calming aroma lavender also has many uses in the kitchen! Lavender truly shines when paired with lemon, try adding it to a simple syrup for homemade gourmet lemonade or in baked goods. Our favorite application is lavender shortbread cookies.
I can’t wait to see you all on Friday!
