Heat Wave!
This week the weather has been scorching hot! Even in the middle of record temperatures the farm is thriving, the Tomatoes and Peppers especially love the extra heat we have been experiencing. The tomatoes are covered in tiny yellow flowers that will soon be delicious veggies for salads and sandwiches.
Right now my main project has been establishing the flowers cutting garden using a technique known as hugelkultur. Hugelkultur ( pronounced hoogal - culture) is a permaculture method that helps build soil with out tilling to create permanent raised beds. To make a a bed using this method first I weed wack any weeds that are in the space I will be using, next I spread about 2” of wood chips as the base of the bed. Then I layer a mixture of topsoil and compost on top of the wood chips. Rinse and repeat for the twenty beds int the cutting garden.
Although Hugelkultur is fairly straight forward it can be a time consuming process. It has many benefits, such as helping a very healthy soil micro biome which in turn means healthy plants. It is also provides excellent drainage and is very helpful in places where digging would be near to impossible due to rocks or tree roots.
This week you will be getting kohlrabi! Perhaps my favorite vegetable that looks like it came straight from space, kohlrabi is a lesser known member of the cabbage family. It has a delightfully light sweet flavor that goes very well in coleslaw, stir fries, salads or sliced thinly and eaten raw!
See you all on Friday!
