Happy Holidays!

I hope you and your families have been having a happy and healthy holiday season!

Here on the farm we have been cleaning up from the busy summer season and preparing for next spring!

One of my favorite ways we get ready for a bountiful season next year is planting fall bulbs. Last year I experimented with a test patch of six unique varieties of globe allium. Out of those six I chose my favorite four based on color, size, hardiness, and bloom time. This fall we added over 400 globe allium from the four varieties and added a new test batch of scented grape hyacinth to our spring flowers that already included over 1,500 specialty heirloom narcissus!

Another fall favorite on the farm is garlic! Like daffodils garlic needs to be planted in the fall so it can get lots of cold dormant time and grow as soon as the weather warms up in the spring. Last year we planted over 300 heads of one variety of garlic. This year we expanded our garlic production to over 1,200 heads, divided between three different varieties! I can’t wait to start harvesting garlic scapes and fresh garlic in the spring to add to pesto and pasta dishes!

If you are anything like me and are already missing fresh veggies from the farm you should definitely consider signing up for our Greens & Blooms CSA! The Greens & Blooms CSA will start on April 8th and run for a quick six weeks. Every week you will receive a bouquet of fresh Spring flowers, a large bag of salad greens and a specialty add in for your salad such as radishes, snow peas, edible flowers or even the very first herbs of the season!

If you are new to CSA this is the perfect way to try it out and see if it works for you and your family. If you would like to sign up for your share just click the “join now” button in the banner and you can sign up for your share of tasty fresh greens and beautifully fragrant flowers.

This time of the year I love to enjoy the hardiest of the farm veggies, root vegetables! Some of my favorite root vegetables include carrots, parsnips, parsley root and celeriac. All of these veggies are perfect to add to soups, roasted, or in hash! Try pairing with fennel, rosemary, or smoked paprika.

See you in next months blog post!
